Aquatennial Celebrates 80th Year With New Events Announces Grand Marshals for 2019 CenterPoint Energy Torchlight Parade

Target Fireworks set to 80s-themed soundtrack, Added Ferris wheel and event named after Minneapolis Mayor Frey

MINNEAPOLIS (June 19, 2019) – Celebrating its 80th year, the Minneapolis Aquatennial announces today the addition of new events and activities, including one named after Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, and this year’s Grand Marshals for the CenterPoint Energy Torchlight Parade on Wednesday, July 24: 2019 James Beard Award winner Ann Kim and Minnesota United FC midfielder Darwin Quintero.

Aquatennial’s lineup will feature a Ferris wheel and two dozen events that will make the city’s official civic celebration a can’t-miss. Brand new for 2019 is Frey’s Fry Throwdown on Friday, July 26, featuring eight local restaurants competing to come up with the best fry-based dish, judged by a team of local foodies and Mayor Frey.

CenterPoint Energy Torchlight Parade led by 2019 James Beard Award winner Ann Kim and Minnesota United FC midfielder Darwin Quintero

As part of its 80th year, Aquatennial is celebrating some of our community’s best stories of 2019 throughout its four days. This year’s Grand Marshals chef, restaurateur and 2019 James Beard Award winner Ann Kim represents Minneapolis’ culinary excellence, while soccer midfielder Darwin Quintero embodies the energy and vibe of the Loons and their newly-opened Allianz Field. The parade takes place Wednesday, July 24, beginning at 8:30 p.m., and runs through downtown, from 2nd Avenue near the Minneapolis Convention Center to 3rd Street.

“Every year, our company looks forward to the CenterPoint Energy Torchlight Parade because of the opportunity to celebrate, support and show appreciation for the communities we serve each day,” said Brad Tutunjian, CenterPoint Energy division vice president of gas operations in Minnesota. “It has been an honor to sponsor this fun-filled event for 19 consecutive years, and it’s our hope that everyone can join in celebrating on July 24.”
Kim, the chef/owner of Young Joni and Pizzeria Lola in Minneapolis and Hello Pizza in Edina, said she is excited to lead the largest nighttime parade in Minnesota.

“I am honored to be a Grand Marshal of this year’s Aquatennial CenterPoint Energy Torchlight Parade,” Kim said. “Each year, Aquatennial brings thousands of people to our city as a way to celebrate what makes Minneapolis special. I look forward to sharing in the events that bring our city’s tradition and future together in such a fun way.”

Quintero, a Tumaco, Colombia native who joined Minnesota United FC in March 2018, led the Loons in goals last season and was the team’s first designated player when he arrived from Club América of Liga MX in 2018.

“It has been such a great year for our club, and the community has made Allianz Field an unbelievable place to play,” Quintero said. “I’m honored to represent Minnesota United FC at the CenterPoint Energy Torchlight Parade and hope our fans will bring their enthusiasm out to join me at Aquatennial.”

K102’s Chris Carr & Company morning show crew will be back to emcee this year’s CenterPoint Energy Torchlight Parade.

Target Fireworks set to 80s-themed music to celebrate
Aquatennial’s 80th year

This year’s Target Fireworks take place over the Mississippi River on Saturday, July 27, and pay tribute to the Aquatennial’s 80th year by syncing the fireworks display to an 80s-themed soundtrack. The pyro-musical is choreographed to match every beat with the display itself.

Saturday’s lineup of events also includes an expanded and enhanced celebration along the riverfront leading up to the Target Fireworks. From 4 – 10 p.m., enjoy views from atop a Ferris wheel, a Family Fun Zone, food trucks, local craft beers, live music, a 50-vendor Minneapolis Craft Market and AquaJam skateboarding at West River Parkway near the Stone Arch Bridge.
“This year’s Aquatennial brings together our annual favorites with new traditions that really speak to the spirit of Minneapolis,” said Leah Wong, vice president of external relations, mpls downtown council. “Whether you want to see the downtown skyline from the top of a Ferris wheel or watch local restaurants compete in a fry dish contest, this year’s new events bridge the history of our city with the creativity and trends of today’s Minneapolis. Join us and enjoy events for all ages, abilities and interests at the 2019 Aquatennial.”

Aquatennial announces 2019 parade, 5K route

CenterPoint Energy Torchlight Parade, Life Time Torchlight 5K on July 24 head down 2nd Avenue this summer.

MINNEAPOLIS (May 16, 2019) – The Minneapolis Aquatennial announced today new routes for the 2019 Aquatennial CenterPoint Energy Torchlight Parade and the Life Time Torchlight 5K.

Routes will begin at the Minneapolis Convention Center, heading down 2nd Avenue, and the Life Time Torchlight 5K will continue through downtown along West River Parkway before ending at Boom Island.

“We are excited about the opportunity to showcase a new part of downtown mpls for Minnesota’s largest night-time parade and our fan-favorite 5k during the 2019 Minneapolis Aquatennial,” said Leah Wong, Vice President of External Relations at the mpls downtown council. “Downtown mpls is dynamic and offers incredible experiences for Aquatennial participants and spectators. We invite the community to join us for what’s sure to be a bright night in our city’s core.”

In the past routes have travelled down Hennepin Avenue, but with this year’s construction, the location has been adjusted.

The Life Time Torchlight 5K welcomes roughly 5,000 runners annually. The adjusted route means fewer turns than the previous route, which weaved through the North Loop, and a longer stretch along the Mississippi Riverfront. It puts a focus on the river, which signifies the birthplace of our city and a major symbol of the Aquatennial, and runners will enjoy full use of West River Parkway.  Fans are encouraged to come early and line the route from 2nd Avenue through West River Parkway to cheer on runners as they pass by.

“This year’s new route allows Life Time Torchlight 5K runners to experience some of the best perks of running in Minneapolis,” said Dan Lakin Life Time Run Events Brand Manager. “The city is known for its urban parks, and this route will bring runners along a longer stretch of West River Parkway before crossing the Mississippi River and finishing on Boom Island for the biggest finish festival of the season.”

The CenterPoint Energy Torchlight Parade will begin at 8:30 pm on Wednesday, July 24. The parade will run along 2nd Avenue from the Minneapolis Convention Center to 3rd Street South. This year’s parade path is located in the heart of downtown, offering plazas and courtyards along with free activities for people to enjoy as they watch. As Minnesota’s largest nighttime parade, the CenterPoint Energy Torchlight Parade welcomes roughly 100 units from across Minnesota each year.

Aquatennial goers will again be able to attend Wednesday’s festivities by using a Free Ride Pass courtesy of Metro Transit. Get there by bus or light rail for free from 4 pm-midnight on July 24 by printing a Free Ride pass, which will be available at Aquatennial.com closer to the event. The Free Ride Passes will also be available on Saturday, July 27 from 4 pm-midnight during the Target Fireworks festivities.

When planning your trip to the Wednesday Aquatennial festivities, remember the Loring Park Pre-Parade Family Fun Night will still take place in Loring Park from 6-8:30 pm. Events include Wilderness Inquiry Voyageur Canoe Rides, Rally the Family tennis activities, family-friendly activities, food trucks and more.

Aquatennial will continue to provide updates on its full schedule of events. Look for the full Aquatennial schedule, including new events for 2019, to be released in early June. Visit www.aquatennial.com or follow @Aquatennial on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for more information.
